Police leap to challenge of helping stricken mate

WHEN Senior Constable Dave Mansfield was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the start of the year, he had many colleagues willing to literally jump to his aid.

Senior Constable Jay Stewart and colleagues Graham Smith, Mick Errickson, Karen Bertram and Steve Bancroft warming up for their Guinness Book of World Records attempt for continuous jumping on a jumping castle.

Senior Constable Jay Stewart and colleagues Graham Smith, Mick Errickson, Karen Bertram and Steve Bancroft warming up for their Guinness Book of World Records attempt for continuous jumping on a jumping castle.

As a fundraiser for the father of three, officers from Tuggerah Lakes police are preparing to set a new Guinness Book of World Records mark for continuous jumping on a jumping castle .

The record stands at 37 hours and 14 seconds, and the group is determined to blow that time out of the water at Mingara Recreation Club, Tumbi Umbi, on May 29-31.

Such was the interest in assisting the Mansfield family, organiser Senior Constable Jay Stewart had to knock back some prospective jumpers as only eight are required.

While there is no strict training schedule planned, Sen-Constable Stewart said they had a plan of attack for their record attempt.

“We’re going to try half an hour stints,” he said.

“We were going to try an hour at a time but I don’t know if you could do it for that long.”

The group have set up a Facebook page and are seeking support from businesses in the lead-up to the event.

Sen-Constable Mansfield was speechless when his colleagues told him of their plans, although he confessed to having a laugh when he was told about the jumping castle.

“I thought it was hilarious to begin with,” he said.

“But I’ve been speechless at how much support has been generated.”

Hunter Valley Amusement Hire has donated the use of a jumping castle.

World record attempt to raise funds for cancer sufferer

Eight officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police will begin a world record attempt for the longest marathon bouncing on a jumping castle at Mingara Recreation Club on Friday, May 29.

The attempt is to raise funds for their Tuggerah Local Area Command colleague, senior constable Dave Mansfield, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the start of the year.

SC Mansfield is a married man and a father of a young family, so, according to the Police Association of NSW, his “police family” is banding together to raise funds to assist the Mansfield family.

The current marathon on a jumping castle world record stands at 37 hours and 14 seconds.

“We believe we can blow that record out of the water by jumping well into Sunday,” said Ms Alison McLaughlin, spokesperson for the Police Association.

A family fun day will be held on Saturday, May 30 as part of the world record attempt including raffles, barbecue, NSW Police Dog Unit, POLAIR landing and “Dunk a Cop”.

COAST COPS SMASH WORLD RECORD FOR JUMPING CASTLE MARATHON

Finally tonight, a group of Central Coast police officers has set a new world record for the longest team marathon on a jumping castle, by bouncing for 43 hours and 25 minutes.

They smashed the previous mark by more than six hours.

It was all about raising money to support fellow Tuggerah Lakes officer, David Mansfield, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February.

“I… I truly am speechless. How do you thank so many people? I guess you keep fighting. This is the most humbling experience I think you could ever have.”

Tourists saved from Sydney bus inferno

A quick-thinking driver and two alert off-duty police officers saved 32 foreign tourists from the smoke, flames and explosions of a burning tour bus in Sydney.

The group were travelling on the Gore Hill freeway at Artarmon about 6.30pm yesterday when the driver noticed an engine fire, prompting him to stop in a breakdown lane and quickly start evacuating his passengers.

Two off-duty police officers, Constable David Mansfield and Senior Constable Bryon Williams, happened to be travelling in a car nearby and decided to follow the bus after noticing smoke coming from its rear.

“As the bus pulled over we got out of the car,” Senior Constable Williams told reporters yesterday.

“The back of the bus was engulfed in flames and smoke.”

By the time the officers got to the front of the bus, passengers were scrambling to get off.

“Obviously there was a lot of chaos,” Senior Constable Williams said.

“Within minutes the whole bus was alight.

“There were numerous explosions … the windows on either side were blowing out with the heat.

“I thought, if we don’t get these people off there’s going to be a big fatality.”

None of the passengers were injured. The officers and the bus driver suffered smoke inhalation.

All that remains of the bus is a burnt shell.

The freeway at Artarmon was closed between Willoughby Road and Reserve Road for nearly an hour while firefighters fought the blaze, causing traffic problems.

Tourists’ lucky escape from bus blaze

Updated

Two off-duty police officers who had just seconds to save passengers from a burning bus on Sydney’s North Shore last night say they feared the bus would explode.

Senior Constable Bryon Williams and Constable David Mansfield were travelling behind the bus when it caught on fire while carrying 32 tourists on the Gore Hill Freeway in Artarmon about 6:00pm.

The driver pulled over and the officers only had seconds to get the passengers off before flames engulfed the bus.

Senior Constable Williams says the officers’ first concern was the passengers.

“It was out of control. Within a minute, the whole bus was nearly alight. The windows on either side of the bus were blowing out with the heat and the amount of fire and that coming from the bus,” he said.

“It was close… I actually thought this thing’s going to blow up and if we don’t get these people off, there’s going to be a big fatality.

“It was very scary from my point of view, from the point of view of the people on the bus and the poor bus driver himself.”

The fire started in the engine bay of the bus.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for more than an hour, causing traffic problems.

Man put on $100 bond for placing poison in sugar

SYDNEY, Friday. —

A man who placed poison in a bottle to catch a workmate who had stolen his sugar was released on a $100 bond today.

Mr Brian Bernard Theodore Haake, 28, storeman and packer, of Green Valley, appeared for sentence before Judge Robson in Sydney Quarter Sessions.

He pleaded guilty to maliciously causing poison to be taken with intent to annoy on March 28 at Botany.

Detective-Sergeant J. Gandy said Mr Haake worked for Australian Wool and Hide Pty Ltd. He had had things stolen from his locker over a period, including clothing and sugar.

When Mr Haake had found his sugar was missing, he had got some from a fellow worker and had put in it half a teaspoonful of sodium arsenate.

He had put it in his locker and a fellow worker had later used it in his tea.

The fellow worker had become ill and had spent four days in hospital and had then been off work for two weeks.

Judge Robson said the charge was unusual, and he was satisfied that Mr Haake had intended to annoy but not to cause harm.

Murder at the Rock – Arrests made

Two people were arrested on Sunday morning following the death of 76-year-old Rodney Willis at his home in The Rock last Wednesday.

Police arrested the pair at a Railway Street address in The Rock.

The arrests came only two days after the completion of the forensic examination of Mr Willis’ home and after interviewing friends and neighbours of the elderly man.

The 23 year old woman and 25 year old man were taken into custody at Wagga Police Station and both charged with murder.

The man was also charged for an outstanding warrant for an unrelated offence.

The pair has been refused bail and are due to appear at Wagga Local Court today (Wednesday April 23).

Police were called to Mr Willis’ home on Scott Street, The Rock at 11.30am April 16, following reports a man was in cardiac arrest.

CPR was performed for 45 minutes by ambulance and police but they pronounced him dead at the scene just after noon.

Police treated the death as suspicious from the beginning having spent the afternoon interviewing family and nearby residents.

Mr Willis’ body was sent to Sydney for a post-mortem examination.

Residents of The Rock and surrounds have been shaken by the murder of 76-year-old local Rodney Willis.

Members of The Rock community groups, friends and neighbours remembered Mr Willis as a man who was clever, private and good-humoured.

On Wednesday he was found in cardiac arrest but emergency crews were unable to revive him after performing CPR for 45 minutes.

Mr Willis was a foundation member of The Rock and District Men’s Shed, a church organist, volunteer with Meals on Wheels, and an active member of the Emily Centre Friendship Group.

Kevin Verdon, friend to Mr Willis and The Rock and District Men’s Shed secretary described   Mr Willis as “gentle and an avid reader”.

“He was a gentle man – his first love was gardening, he used to write poetry and he was an avid reader who loved the old movies,” he said.

A memorial will be held today (Wednesday April 23) at The Rock and District Men’s Shed starting just after midday.

Mr Willis was unmarried and his passions included poetry, photography and gardening.

Isabel Seberry volunteered alongside Mr Willis at Meals on Wheels and described the elderly man as sweet and reliable.

“We’ll miss him terribly,” Ms Seberry said.

“He was at the Emily Centre on Tuesday night, and regularly comes here twice a week to visit and chat.”

A motor-cyclist is taken into custody by Police in riot gear at Mount Panorama.

“The men in hospital said it was reminiscent of the movie ‘Zulu’. They said the bikies came at them in bursts with barrages of projectiles.”

This was how Sergeant Mark Edwards, of the public-relations branch of the Bathurst police, described the scene on Saturday night at Mount Panorama

racetrack near Bathurst when an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 motorcyclists held about 100 police officers under siege for

about 5 1/2 hours.

The motorcyclists threw rocks, Molotov cocktails and sticks of gelignite at police sheltering in the police-station compound at the camping ground.

Eighty-one of the 91 members of the Sydney-based riot unit, the Tactical Response Group, stationed in the compound, were injured. Sixteen required treatment at Bathurst District Hospital.

Police cars and ambulances were hit by missiles as they tried to reach scores of injured policemen and youths.

One police sergeant who kicked away a stick of gelignite which landed in front of him appears likely to lose the tops of three of his toes.

“He’s very lucky,” Sergeant Edwards said. “If it had exploded before he kicked it away it would have blown off his legs. As it was, the blast knocked down two other men standing near him.”

The front door of the police station was rocked by an explosion, and thousands of dollars damage was caused to police vehicles. Electricity to the compound was cut off, but police had an emergency generator standing by.

Police arrested 77 people on a total of 134 charges, ranging from resisting arrest to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. They will appear in Bathurst Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

One person was arrested after a motorcycle was driven into a line of policemen, knocking them over.

In Bathurst, police motorcyclists were struck by rocks and sticks as they attempted to Breathalyze motorcyclists in the streets.

The officer in charge of the Tactical Response Group, Superintendent Colin Cogle, said the force had been the target of a “screaming mob”. It was the worst confrontation his men had faced.

Flanked on three sides, the police, wielding nightsticks and protected by shields, helmets and padded jackets, had made repeated charges out of their fenced compound into the crowds, arresting one or two people each time.’

Each charge ended with a retreat under a hail of missiles.

Mount Panorama has been the scene of violence in past years during the Easter motorcycle meeting. Police were happy with the behaviour of the crowd last year after violence in 1980 and 1981 threatened the future of the event.

Sergeant Edwards said about 25,000 motorcycle enthusiasts were camped on the mountain for this year’s event.

The trouble began about 7.30pm on Saturday when a man and a woman in a Volkswagen in the camping ground were harassed by a group which began rocking the car. The couple fled to the police compound and the motorcyclists set the car on fire.

After police had put out the fire, motorcyclists rolled the car to the police station and tried to roll it through the wire fence surrounding the compound.

The motorcyclists began pelting bottles, cans, wine casks full of rocks, burning toilet rolls which had been soaked in petrol, Molotov cocktails, and half-sticks of gelignite into the compound. Several policemen had their uniforms set alight while others received serious cuts and bruises.

“The men in hospital said that this year it was worse than in previous years,” Sergeant Edwards said. “They said it was terrible. It just didn’t stop.

“The men would go outside to try and calm things down, then they would be forced back inside by a barrage of projectiles.

“They made repeated requests to the bikies to stop things but they just didn’t listen.

“They’re a strange breed. You just can’t reason with them. We’re convinced that the whole thing was a deliberately planned exercise, but it just makes no sense at all.” ; Bricks and large rocks had been piled up for use as ammunition, and other weapons had been devised.

The crowd began leaving the mountain yesterday afternoon and police did not expect any more serious trouble during the night.

Rower’s comeback

Colin Cogle, a former King’s Cup representative, will make a comeback for Haberfield in Saturday’s Boone Cup senior eights at Mosman club’s regatta.

The regatta, which will open the rowing season, will be hold on the Lane Cove River.

Cogle, a policeman, rowed for NSW in the 1946 ( Penrith ) King’s Cup and again in 1947 (Perth).

His presence in the crew has greatly strengthened Haberfield, which is experiencing a shortage of senior oarsmen. Cogle will “row in the No. 3 seat.

Three Empire Games representatives, Les Montgomery (stroke), Erwin Eder (seven), and Ken Gee ( five ) also will row for Haberfield.

Sydney crew, which will row against” Haberfield, has been weakened by the inclusion of five of its star men in the Christchurch \(NZ) centenary Games squad.

AMY BEDELPH
Born Amy Franklin on 5 May 1924 at Lilydale, one of 19 children, Amy is the eldest of the four daughters still living.
After Lilydale School, Amy joined the Women’s Land Army at 17, working in a Scottsdale market garden and later in a factory. The AWLA was established on 27 July 1942 as a national voluntary organisation to replace male farm workers who had either enlisted or were working in other essential war work such as munitions.
Later, Amy joined the Salvation Army, attending a Melbourne training college before her first posting to Kent Town, South Australia, followed by Jamestown and then on to Adelaide where she had her own church.
Back in Melbourne, Amy caught up with colleague Arthur Clee, whom she married, and they went on to Hamilton in north-western Victoria as Army officers.
Returning to Tasmania, Amy worked as an Officer at Smithton in the early 1950s and later as a bookbinder for The Mercury.
Initially appointed special constable on 1 April 1963, on 18 March 1966 she was appointed constable 570 (later 384). Arthur was then a constable and superintendent of the Hobart Police Boys Club. Why the police? Well, Arthur was naturally a big influence, but Amy also recalls Commissioner Delderfield’s words – “You may as well join too; you will enjoy it.” So she did. Amy was, I believe, the first married woman to be appointed, and the first whose husband was also a serving policeman. At that time, the role was largely a social welfare one, and it was what most women of that time expected and indeed enjoyed.
Amy assisted Arthur at Hobart Police Boys Club, and went on to be supervisor of the newly-formed Police Girls Club, which had been established in 1955, using the old Sackville Street garage premises as a base. Both clubs were amalgamated in 1964.
In June 1965, the then Commissioner and his wife, as patrons, expressed their appreciation to the Clees for ” …the devoted and dedicated service you have as husband and wife, apart from your both being members of the Tasmania Police Force, contributed to the standards achieved, the progress made, and the enthusiasm of the members of both Clubs.”
Commended, following the 1967 bushfire disaster, Amy transferred to Glenorchy on 19 May 1969. As the only policewoman at the station, she was effectively O.I.C. At this time, there were 14 other policewomen employed within Tasmania Police.
Amy resigned on 22 December 1972 and later married policeman Ivan Bedelph.
Today, Amy is a sprightly 91 years of age and a resident of “The Manor”, a lovely residential facility in Guy Street, Kings Meadows. Amy simply takes things as they come. Her “life story” hangs framed upon her wall, together with her badge and insignia. Amy regards it with no regrets and a large amount of pride.
